Confusion over washing machine instructions

I love this bag but I purchased it because it said you could wash in the washing machine...the label inside says do not emerse in water and wipe clean only?! My bag has started to pong after having yogurt spilt in it and I'm a bit confused as to wether it can be washed in the washing machine or the dishwasher?
